Counterproductive School Measures - September 9th, 2009

When I was in school, their big push was to eliminate soda and vending machines from the school. Yes, I got more than one full lunch from there. But it’s kinda like eliminating certain restaurants by law in certain areas, are you really making a dent or are you just pissing people off because you’re making them go further to actually get the foods they are going to eat either way or bring them with them in the mornings. They talked about eliminating them from the time I was in 7th grade, or about them, and then instead they eliminated the salad bar at my school to cut costs. Really constructive right? Instead, they got prepackaged salads that were wilting half the time, and instead everybody who had lined up and waited for half the lunch period just to get through that stupid salad line started eating pizza and fries instead. So obviously, it’s one of those things that you can’t just take away things you think are bad, you have to provide the options that many think are good so that kids will actually want them. That being said, my classmates actually gained weight as a whole after that and continued to through high school, and yet they never brought back certain healthier things that people actually wanted before.
