Common Sense - August 6th, 2009

Vegetarianism does not always equal out to being skinnier or healthier.  I beg to differ.  When I went vegetarian, I wasn’t the most disciplined individual.  But in general terms, though I ate more carbs, I also ate more fruits and vegetables, and it led to significant and noticeable weight loss without real effort on my part outside of cutting out meats.  Vegan was even better in that way, and I have to say I felt great, energy wise anyway.  But I have heard of some people who gain weight, and I’ve seen some quite overweight vegetarians.  So I guess it doesn’t always work that way.  For example, I knew one vegetarian that decided that was his excuse to stick to a diet of cheese dip, chips, and ice cream…..all the time!  I would’ve never actually thought of that concept on my own, but apparently I’m quite alone in that.  It just never occurred to me.  But he had actually gained weight because of that as compared to his weight when he was eating meat, which ironically he had a much more balanced diet.  Others I’ve seen lose weight, but all they ever do is take vitamin supplements or supplements of some kind in place of food, also not good.  So while you would think it would do it in itself, you also have to use common sense.
